Treatment wetlands
Numerous scientific studies have demonstrated that wetlands provide valuable ecological services such as enhancing groundwater recharge and discharge; reducing flood intensity; controlling erosion; purifying water; and providing habitat for a variety of aquatic and terrestrial species. However, current estimates indicate that over the past 200 years more than 50% of all wetlands in the lower 48 states have been destroyed. Section 404 of the Federal Clean Water Act as well as state and local regulations currently provide protections that ensure wetlands are maintained and protected from filling, draining, or other alterations.
Biota’s staff is well versed with current wetland regulations, permitting, and compensatory mitigation requirements. Wetland delineation and authorization from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) are often required to comply with wetland regulations. Biota’s wetland staff, including the Senior Wetland Scientist who is certified by the Society of Wetland Scientists, has a vast amount of experience with current USACE wetland delineation methodology and requirements. Biota maintains a strong working relationship with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies, and these relationships, along with our knowledge and experience help us streamline the delineation and permit review process for our clients.

Our expertise also allows us to provide clients with a design-build service for wetland restoration, creation, and mitigation projects. Since the company was established, Biota has completed more than 100 wetland restoration and/or creation projects in the Intermountain West. From design to implementation, Biota employs innovative engineering, hydrologic, and revegetation techniques to ensure restored and created wetlands function as a natural component of larger ecosystems.
Biota can tailor projects to meet our client’s needs and desires while satisfying all regulatory requirements. For example, we can create wetlands that attract specific species of wildlife such as trumpeter swans and other waterfowl, or we can create wetlands that target specific ecological functions such as erosion control and water quality improvement.
